Wortree is an iOS reading companion: you share a photo or screenshot of a book page, and Wortree explains it, building a running memory of each book you read. This policy covers the Wortree app and the Wortree API service it talks to. We've tried to write it the way we'd want it explained to us.
Your account. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive and store the email address and name your provider shares (with Sign in with Apple you can use Apple's private relay email instead of your real one). You can also continue as a guest, in which case we create an anonymous account with no email or name. For each sign-in session our server records an IP address and device user agent (a standard part of the session system we use); sessions expire after 30 days.
Your library. When you're signed in, your library syncs to our servers so it follows you across devices: book titles and authors, the AI-generated explanations of pages you've scanned, per-book memory summaries, any "focus" notes you write for a book, bookmarks, and timestamps. We also keep a simple daily counter of how many explanations you request, to enforce fair-use limits.
Page images. When you scan a page, the image is sent to our server and forwarded to Google Gemini, Google's AI service, which generates the explanation. Reading context goes with it — your library's book titles, the current book, your focus notes, and memory summaries — so the explanation can build on what came before. No account identifiers (email, name, or user ID) are sent to Google. We do not store your page images: they are processed to generate the explanation and then discarded. Google processes this data as our service provider, does not use it to train its models, and keeps short-lived logs only for abuse prevention under its API terms.
Reading notes on Mem0. To let explanations recall much earlier pages of the same book, we store short distilled notes (two or three sentences per page, about themes and where the page left off) on Mem0, a memory-storage platform. These notes are filed under a hashed identifier that contains no email, name, account ID, or book title — we never send Mem0 your identity in the clear.
The app also has an optional developer mode in which page images are sent directly to Google using an API key you supply yourself, bypassing our server.
Wortree contains no analytics or tracking SDKs and shows no ads. We don't sell your data, share it with data brokers, or track you across other apps and websites. We only use your data to provide Wortree itself.
The library stored locally on your device is yours and stays there after account deletion — it's removed when you delete books in the app or delete the app itself.
Wortree is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version at this address and update the effective date. Meaningful changes will be called out in the app.
